The sun sets on a rocky beach

Our Story

“One night during COVID lockdown, we were chilling at our apartment in Lisboa, indulging in a bit too much of Portugal’s fine wine (as one does). Somewhere between sips, an idea hit me: why not try making my own surf wax? I’d been dabbling with beeswax and other materials for crafts during quarantine, so I figured, why not?

After a little research, trial and error, and a bunch of lovely surfers willing to experiment with us, we’ve created unique recipes for three temperature gradients of incredibly sticky surf wax made only with regenerative ingredients!

The more research I did into synthetic surf wax, the more I realized how toxic most surf waxes are for both the planet - particularly our coastal ecosystems - and ourselves. Did you know that 95% of surf wax on the market is made using paraffin, an industrial petroleum byproduct?

Fast forward a few years to March of 2024 and we (KIKI) were invited by WSL One Ocean to participate in the WSL Rip Curl Pro in Peniche, where we met lots of pros, coaches, free surfers, industry heads, and generally cool people. Needless to say, my friend Maya and I got good feedback, had some great conversations, and are more stoked than even to push natural surf wax to the masses!”

About KIKI

KIKI Natural Surf Wax came to life during the quarantine days of COVID. Like many of us,
when we realized the surf wax we'd been using wasn't so great for the environment or for us. Turns out, most surf waxes out there contain paraffin, a byproduct of petroleum, coal, and oil shale. Even the alternative soy waxes have their downsides, like ties to deforestation and degenerative, unregulated farming practices.

So, we decided to do things differently. KIKI uses local beeswax from small scale farmers in the Alentejo and and tree rosin from Tres-a-Montes in Portugal.

We believe in a simple philosophy: to leave no trace and make a positive impact on our coastal havens and the communities surrounding them. It's not just about being green; it's about doing right by our environment and the folks around us.

Join us in catching waves responsibly and leaving the world a little better than we found it, one surf session at a time!
